How much do you REALLY know about dog attacks? Here is a list of True/False questions. Who wants to see how much they really know about dog attacks? 1. There are approximately 4.5 million reported dog bites annually in the United States. 2. Dog bites are the second leading cause of childhood injury, surpassing playground accidents. 3. Dog bites to people of the male gender are approximately two times greater than the incidence involving females. 4. Mixed breeds and not pure bred dogs are the type of dog most often involved in inflicting bites to people. 5. The list of breeds most involved in both bite injuries and fatalities changes from year to year. 6. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document that a chain dog is 2.8 times more likely to bite than an unchained dog. 7. Canines not spayed or neutered are three times more likely to bite than sterilized ones. 8. Annually in the United States there are only approximately 20 human fatalities directly resulting from a dog attack. misbehavin165, My point, which obviously you did not get, was that there are many aspects that can be controlled in regards to attacks. Such as getting a dog fixed makes it less likely to bite. Or, chained dogs are more likely to bite, so DON"T CHAIN THEM! Also, that there are only about 20 deaths each year due to dog attacks, which is one of the rarest types of deaths, yet they get some of the most publicity! Now, I THINK EVEN YOU CAN GET IT!
Mixed Breed Dogs? I'm thinking about getting a mixed breed dog soon from the local animal shelter. I'm going to list the mixed breeds i want and please tell me if it would be a good mixed breed to have around kids. What ever dog I go get will be going straight to training. 1. lab/german shepherd dog 2. lab/border collie 3. border collie/ german shepherd dog 4. german shepherd dog/ Austrian kelpie * Australian kelpie
In the Top Ten Most Dangerous Dog list Do you know where these three dogs are placed:? German Shepherd/Shepherd Mix Great Dane Dogs St Bernards The reason I ask is that a lot of people I meet say my breed of dog is dangerous and bad with other dogs and people. They fail to realise however that German Shepherds are way more dangerous and even Great danes and believe it or not St Bernards. So go on try and guess....... Oh and by the way for all labrador owners out there in 1995 they were number five on the most dangerous dogs list. Are they really as cute as people think? I think not! Just making you aware of facts, Akita's are not attacking people anywhere near as much as other breeds like, German Shepherds - Labradors - etc.
What dog breed should I get? I need a hypoallergenic dog that doesn't shed much and doesn't need professional gromming. list some mixed/ regular breeds and maybe even some names but please say whereter they are boy or girl names.
Mixed breed fustration? What is up with these people mixing breeds like labradoodles and selling them in the paper like they are a pure bred? These arent pure breds but they are in the paper going for healthy price tags! I have a gordon/golden mix but I would never put her pups in the paper listed as gorgolds for 500 bucks! ( i wouldnt anyways shes fixed even if she werent her pups would be way too cute to get rid of. Shes already had a litter of 2 before we got her) These hybrid crossbreeds are essentially mutts. I cant justify paying large amounts of money for a mutt mix. If im gonna pay that kind of money i want papers to show their bloodlines. I can understand paying 1500 for a shipped pure bred dane, thats one thing. This is getting outta hand! Theres a hybridmix page on the net...you should see some of the mixes they are coming up with the list is HUGE!! http://dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/2006/09/hybrid_mixed_dog_breeds.php Im not saying they arent good dogs...dont get me wrong. Its just paying a healthy price for a "mutt". Mines a mutt and i love her! I wouldnt trade her for anything. what are your opinions of this?
What dog breed should/could I mix with my female Keeshond? I have a wonderful companion, Keeshond. I want to find a stud for but i am not interested in a pure bred litter, i want to mix her with another breed, but i do not know what breeds are copatible, most suitable, or most healthy. I have been looking for a list all over the internet for compatible mixing breed's, but i am unsure if such a list exsists? Can anyone help? Thanks
"Designer Club" site-I want to bread some speshul rare breeds, can you help?Really, I am making it official!? Someone posted a site with a list of "breeds" from mixes. Disgustingly long list with dogs that probably don't even exist. http://www.designermixes.org/Breeds/BreedList.aspx Well, fun for us, they let you submit your own! Think they may actually post it? I have no life, figured I could take a moment to make up a breed so I could be special! Anyone else want to play or am I just being too silly? Legit- What is the best way to select a dog breed? This is where you can submit your own: http://www.designermixes.org/Breeds/NewSubmit.aspx For the legit question I meant how to pick a breed best suited to the owner. HOLY CRAP! They posted the freakin thing! They bought my "Baloondle" crap...I kept saying ow the dogs hit the ceiling and were airy...wow Should I sign up just so I can sumbit a picture of a baloon?
what breeds are in my dog? We adopted him Nov 29th 06. but all his paper work says is that he's 4months, retriever/lab mix and for coloring - brindle. so if thats all he is where did that brindle come from? my bro says pitbull. Also what about those ears? they don't look pit or lab. My cousin said they looked like a shepherds. So I am thinking maybe hes retriever/lab/pitbull/shep mix. I am trying to get an idea of his breeds so I can train him the best possible way and maybe get an idea as to what he might be like as he gets older. He is very laid back. learns fast. is housebroken. doesn't bark. very friendly with people and other pets. So I am wondering if the breeds i listed seem right on? or if maybe someone thinks something else. .Also if so do you think those breeds mix togther are good? I heard dogs like pits mixed with dogs proven to guarding like sheps are bad? any truth? Here are a few pics of him. http://tinyurl.com/y5dam5 http://tinyurl.com/y56xvd http://tinyurl.com/txa2f http://tinyurl.com/vat
ASDA- American Shepherd Dog registration, what do you think? I don't really intend to carry this out, because of lack of time and young age, but i think its a cool idea, suggestions or creative criticism please! All of the following information is written in present perspective, although it does not exist... yet. ASDA The ASDA is the American Shepherd Dog Association. It is a collection of 18 dog breeds, listed below. Dog Breeds included in the ASDA: Australian Cattle Dog Australian Shepherd Bearded Collie Beauceron Belgian Malinois Belgian Sheepdog Belgian Tervuren Border Collie Bouvier des Flandres Briard Canaan Dog Collie German Shepherd Dog Old English Sheepdog Polish Lowland Sheepdog Puli Shetland Sheepdog Swedish Vallhund All dogs belonging to the ASDA must be atleast 13 inches at the withers*. All dogs will be judged in accordance to their AKC breed standard. Their are three levels a dog belonging to the ASDA may reach. Only dogs born of ASDA parents may be ASDA registered. * Swedish Vallhund's measure from 12.5 to 13.5 inches at the whithers, this breed is an exception. Level 1: Pedigree All dogs wishing to be registered with the ASDA must have parents who have all three levels of registraion. Any dog that can prove its pedigree has a level one registration. level 2: Conformation After the age of seven months any ASDA registered dog has the opportunity to find an ASDA OR AKC judge and have their dog judged according to the standards for their breed. Any dog that has a level one registration (Pedigree) and is judged to be of good standard may continue on to level three registration. Level 3: Shepherd Any dog who has both Level 1 and Level 2 registration are open to participate in the yearly herding challenges offered by the ASDA. A dog who passes certain herding challenges may receive this level conformation. Level + :Health One a year every year dogs must be vet checked for sickness and disease. Any dogs carrying a disease which can be passed to its pups or to the other breeding dog, will have its registration completely void until it can be proven that the disease is not present in the dog. This level is renewed every year and any dog who intends to breed must have it. Only after receiving ALL FOUR levels of registration, Pedigree, Conformation and Registration will the offspring of an ASDA registered dog be able to be registered with The ASDA. The whole point of the ASDA would be to promote the integrity of herding breeds by demanding they both comply to the breed standards and can herd. This continues the original purpose, and looks of the breed. When the registration starts, I will obviously need to allow any AKC registered dogs to join. The point of judging the dogs is so that they will comply with the standards of the herding breeds, which the ASDA is trying to save. The ASDA would be a purebred registration that required both herding and judging of purebred dogs, in order to promote the integrity of herding breeds, while still using them for their original use. Mutts and mixed breeds would absolutely not be accepted, because it would in some ways encourage the breeding of mixed breeds, which the ASDA in against. The whole point of the registration levels is to make it so that only the best dogs have puppies; this prevents extra puppies AND means that all registered puppies have guaranteed health and excellent breeding lines. Randee Tas poses an interesting point. At the beginning of the ASDA, only those 18 Akc herding breeds will be accepted, but just like the Akc, over time we wil expand to include more breeds, such as the Catahoula Leopard dog and German Coolie. Yes, animal_a... there is a reason why i have chosen to exclude both Samoyed's and Rottwielers. THe reason is that, although they may both be used for herding, they are no longer bred for herding. Rottweilers were bred in Germany as herding dogs, but were quickly switched to beasts of burden used to pull carts and carry wood, no longer bred to herd. Now they are mostly bred for guard dogs, police dogs, and pets. Samoyed's were originally bred for herding reindeer and pulling sleds in Siberia, but are not often used as herders in the US, however due to the recent looking up of Samoyed's I would heavily consider adding them along with other herding stock breeds . Dane lover © Kasey Kahne Rocks, um that is exactly what happens, a dog whose parents have all 4 levels of registration has automatically level 1 registration, and he/she too must work through all four levels. About the Sammy's and Rottie's your right they are akc acceptable, they just dont show up on the group page. Great Dane lover © Kasey Kahne Rocks "Instead of allowing all AKC registered dogs to join, make them go through all the levels first, that way you don't have bad examples of the breed, just like AKC does." That is exactly what I would do, any dog who originally registers with the ASDA, whether it is the original Akc dog who begin it, or the pups centuries later will have to reach all 4 levels in order to breed.
Which dog breed attacks? MY QUESTION: WHY? Tony A- I agree, PETA sucks! Don't worry so much tho, if we can agree that all dogs are equally able to attack, and the anti-dog crew starts crying about banning breeds of dogs favored by the wealthy and powerful, then BSL will come to a screeching halt. Like the Salem Witch Trials. They went on and on with lies, accusation, and murder until finally a relative of the governor was accused, and BOOM, no more witch trials! Thanx for yr input!

dog breeds, what do you thnk? lets see i own a american bull dog and a american pittbull. They are my babies and both samantha and maxwell would do anything for me. Maxwell is 10 month and samnatha is 3 months. I believe that the dogs attitude is based on how a dog is raised. although bulldog were used to catch and kill bulls. and pitts were also used for the same and to lock down and not let go is there instinct to keeping ahold that bull. anyways. i love my dogs and i would do anything for them. I have been raised with or owned these breeds throughout my life. chihuahua( the only dog that has ever bit me) chinese pug lab/rotti mix husky/shephard mix leopard curr/ amer. bulldog mix german shephard chowchow dobi lab/dobi cross ridgeback/g. shephard mix greyhound/lab mix rottiweiler and my fiancee has a dalmation and a walker hound. so many of the dogs i ahve lived with are on a "bad Dog" list. so what do you think? about the bad dog breeds?
What breeds of dogs have curly tails? What breed is my dog? I got a puppy a couple of weeks ago from the animal shelter. They said that he is part Cairn Terrier (like Toto from the Wizard of Oz) and part something else. They said they didn't know what the "something else" was. He has a curlier tail than a Cairn, but he is the same size my pure bred Cairn was at this age... so the other breed he is mixed with is probably another small breed. Other than the curly tail, he really looks a lot like my other Cairn did at this age. To view photos of him go to www.flickr.com/photos/stephaniedarnell He is the first four photos. Tell me what other breed you think he might be. If you find a site online that lists breeds with curly tails, please provide the link. Thanks!
What are your top five favorite dog breeds? please only use full bred dogs [such as dogs in the akc], just because if they are mixed those lists could go on and on. also, you can list a top ten if you'd like, but some people dont have as many favorite breeds as i do. My top ten: jack russell terrier greyhound great dane st. bernard borzoi weimaraner dalmation husky boxer rottweiler i started tallying these all up, basically i stopped after about 10 entries... but i noticed that almost everyones favorite was a german shepard. many people also liked rottweilers, great danes, malamutes, golden retrievers, pitbulls, weimers, and collies. i hope you all liked this question! also, if you thought this was interesting gimme some stars, id love to have them!
Any guesses as to what kind of mixed dog I have? I'm hoping someone would have some good guesses. I'm moving soon and they won't let me off the hook with telling them "she's a mix" They have 8 breeds on a list they won't let you have, and I'm just praying that she's not got any pit in her. That's the only one I'm truly concerned with. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v286/souldancer/IMG_2275.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v286/souldancer/IMG_2413.jpg She's a pretty large dog, 65 pounds and she's 5 years old.
How NOT to get taken when buying a dog? Well, we've all seen the questions where people are asking about their new designer dogs. This is a good place to come up with a list of how NOT to get taken when buying a dog. First of all, nearly all dogs are adorable when they are puppies. That's one of the reasons people are able to sell all of these new "designer dogs". If your intent is to just have a dog as a companion there is no reason to spend $500.00 to $1,000.00 for a dog. Especially one that is a mixed breed. You are being taken advantage of BIG TIME. A gallon of milk costs about $5.00 these days. If someone told you that the milk came from a "special" cow that was half something and half something else would you be willing to pay $10.00 for that same gallon of milk? What are some other advice we can give people on how to buy a dog the RIGHT way? Well, I'm a judge for the AKC and for ASCA. I've taught obedience for 30 years and tracking for 20 years. It just drives me crazy when I see people spending around $1,000.00 for designer dogs that end up with the genetic faults of both breeds.
Dog breed mix? Any guesses what breeds this guy is? The rescue group has him listed as "border collie mix". I'm going to visit him tomorrow, thought breed heritage might give me an idea of behaviors to expect / watch out for. http://www.petfinder.com/photoView/photoView.cgi?petid=9485152

I want a dog that is medium size. But since I want to take on the responsibility for another dog I have to prove I am responsible. I am responsible but I need to prove it to them. Can you tell me ways to show I am responsible? also if you want can you please include a list of dog breeds good with kids and other dogs I am the one that wants to take full responsibility for the puppy it is not parents idea and anyway I am on summer break and my dad can take care of the dog when I am at school I am in school 6 hours a day then I come home and play with my dog and cat and then when my mom comes home we walk my dog I am only in elementary school

I asked a question about a shelter puppy a little while ago asking what mix people thought he was what about this one what mix is she? she is also a shelter dog and her breed is listed as staffy x http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f132/kyanesmum/92F8AD37-B082-26FF-76660AEB67D5337A.jpg http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f132/kyanesmum/92F8AD47-0678-9400-8486ADDB754DC388.jpg I am australian and she is from an australia shelter so I was thinking maybe she has kelpie in her this is an adult kelpie, doesnt she look a little like her? http://www.mypets.net.au/template_images/AustrKelpieLiver2_wb.jpg
Among the popular poodle mix breeds, please answers the three questions below:? 1) which poodle mix breed(s) is/are most desirable to you? 2) Which is/are most teddy-bear-like to you? 3) What color(s) is/are best for your most desirable poodle mix breed? 4) Male or female? And please, if you have anything else that is related to this question, then do share. You can see the list of "Popular Poodle Mix Breeds" on this website: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/poodlemix.htm. Why am I asking you this? Well, I want to gather information so I can choose my perfect dog companion. I can't choose from all the adorable faces of poodle mix breeds, lol. So help me, please! I know I am being bias about choosing a pet dog; however, just to let you all know, I am also looking forward to own other breeds as well.
Small dog owners please read and give me your opinion:? I have my dogs on a really high quality dog food. The questions that I have are not because of the dog food recall because the brand of food I use was not one on the list. Here are my questions for small dog owners. 1) Do you feed your dogs a raw diet? 2) Do you think it has been beneficial to your dog and if yes how? 3) Do you think it has been bad for your dog at all and if yes how? 4) What brand of food do you use if you don't feed a raw diet and why? 5) Do you have a hard time finding products that suite the size of your dog (toys, treats, bones and even dog food size)? 6) How old is your dog? 7) What breed is your dog? Mixed? 8) Have you had an medical problems with your dog? If yes what? 9) Where did you get your dog? 10) Do you think there should be vets that specialize in small breeds or is there one in your area? if yes what area? Thanks for your time & answers.
Need to know a good family dog~? I want to get a good family dog for my two boys 7& 4. I would like around a 20lb dog, low maintenance, not too much of a digger or barker. A breed that will have energy to keep up with little boys but not to aggressive. Preferably a breed that I can rescue from the pound. It doesn't matter about it being a mixed breed. I have a pretty good size back yard and a HUGE carpeted playhouse that could be it's new home while outdoors. Please list your sources if you have any. I've looked at IAMS about breeds and it suggested Australian Shepherd, or a Shiba Inu do you know anything about these breeds?
Dogs breeds that are good with cats? I have 2 already established cats and was thinking of rescuing / adopting a dog. Are there any particular dog breeds that do well with cats? Are there breeds that I should stay away from? I was looking to adopt a Corgi, Corgi mix or a Beagle. Would either of these dogs be good? I have no previous dog experience so all the information would be helpful. I was looking to adopting an older dog not a puppy. I have looked on the AKC website but it doesn't provide in depth information. So please don't think I'm expecting other people to do all the work for me by answering these questions. I know that shelters usually list if they're good with cats or not but some do not. Also, I live in a 2 bedroom apartment so the animals would be living in close quarters. (I also know that I would have to take the dog out etc, I realize the upcoming responsibilities of having a dog.) Thanks and I will choose a Best Answer.
Looking for a small breed hypoallergenic puppy? I'm thinking of getting a puppy and was hoping for a some advice or suggestions from other pet owners. I've listed a few of the guidelines I've been considering as I look. 1. Hypoallergenic 2. Little to no shedding 3. toy or small size (under 10 pounds) 4. I live in an apartment with little yard (so something that requires little outdoor exercise and doesn't bark all the time) 5. Doesn't require much grooming 6. pure or mixed breed 7. Easy or fairly easy to train (especailly house training) I'm looking for a companion/lap dog that doesn't mind riding in cars and is good with other dogs and children. I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, I've looked at a few different mixed breeds (like the papi-poo and yorkie-poo) but can't find any pictures of what they look like as adults. Any suggestions?
How can a pet store justify selling mixed breed puppies for so much money? There is an add in my local paper for a pet store selling multiple types of mixed breeds of dogs, some I didn't even know what they were, I had to call and ask. When I told her they sounded like mutts- the worker said "No, they're 'crosses'." How can pet stores justify charging hundreds for these "crosses? Below I've listed the puppies and prices that were in the ad: Shugs- $399 Maltenese- $499 Forkies- $399 Shihtza-Poo- $399 Mini Bull Dogs- $699 They have new arrivals coming in called Yorkie Chons too....

Poll: Do you own a popular breed, a rare breed, or a mixed breed? I'm curious of the breakdown of what dogs people own on Answers. So, here's my poll. There are seven categories for dogs, based on their popularity and if they're purebred. Write how many dogs in each category you own. Please put your poll answer at the top of your answer. If you want to say more about your dogs, please do so after the poll results. For example: Most Popular Breed: 2 Mixed Breed with Unknown History: 1 Here we go. There are seven categories: 1. Most Popular Breed 2. Very Popular Breed 3. Slightly Popular Breed 4. Less Well-Known Breed 5. Rare Breed 6. Mixed Breed with Known History 7. Mixed Breed with Unknown History The first four categories are defined below. Basically all AKC breeds, based on popularity and registration stats. I've also added the American Pit Bull Terrier since that's a popular breed without being AKC-registered. It's in the same category as the AmStaff. Rare breeds are any purebreds not listed. If you have a mixed breed that you know what all its parents are, use Mixed Breed with Known History. This is for accidental breedings and “designer dogs.” For all other mixed breeds whose history is a guess, use Mixed Breed with Unknown History. What do you think of this... ? Well, earlier today I was just strolling through the Dogs section, answering questions, and came upon the seemingly daily 'Where can I find a reputable *insert designer dog breed here* breeder?' question. I answered with my typical 'No reputable breeder will breed cross breed or mixed breed dogs' response. Then I read the other answers. One of them surprised me. Somebody recommended looking at www.puppyfind.com, saying that they have all sorts of cheap dogs. Then they went on to say that for a 'really good dog breeder' you should look... in the newspaper! How many reputable breeders do you know advertise in the newspaper? Most of the ones I know of have waiting lists, and homes already arranged before the puppies are born. Most of the dog ads in the newspaper near me are things like 'Boxer pups, $400, unregistered, great family pets', or 'Cute pups, half Deerhound, half Mastiff, POA'. I.e. - from backyard breeders. What do you think?
"Hypoallergenic" Dogs? Why is it that as soon as someone says, "I want a dog that doesn't shed, any suggestions?" people attack them with, "All dogs shed so just deal with it!!!!!" I would not go so far as to say that there are "hypoallergenic" dogs... that's a word for shampoo bottles, not dog breeds. However, I know for a fact that there are dogs that don't shed! How about hairless dogs? How about dogs with human-like "hair" rather than fur that shed less than humans do? How about my mixed breed with Shih Tzu and Bichon in her (two dogs on the "no-shed" list) that I know hasn't given off an iota of hair or dander since we got her, because if she did my super-allergic dad would blow up like a balloon? So what's up with you people who refuse to admit that non-shedding dogs don't exist? Are you just jealous because you got Pugs or Labs or some other shedding machines and you have to follow them around with a vacuum cleaner? WOW. I have never seen such eccentric thumbs-upping and downing. Yay! I asked a controversial question! I don't take any of the harsh words personally, I'm just asking why people feel obligated to type them. BTW: I'm not looking to buy a dog that doesn't shed. Please read the question thoroughly people. Stephanie Loves Sam, your 3rd paragraph is the key that tells me YOU are about 13 or 14 and trying to act like some adult who loves to pick on anyone and everyone. You are also probably an owner of a Pug that leaves piles of fur around. Lora P, WHO told you that Pomeranians and Huskies don't shed? Wow. Stephanie Loves Sam, I'm not going to get banned just so I can let someone as pathetic as you have it. Go ahead and sit back and brag to your precious 'Sam.' And go vacuum your dog.
What type of mixed breed is this? I adopted this dog a year ago from a shelter who had taken her and 20 other dogs from a hoarder. The shelter listed her as a Jack Russell mix, but I'm curious to know what other breeds are in her. She's a little girl, only 13 pounds. I'm guessing there's Jack Russell, maybe Papillon or Chihuahua, maybe even Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in her. She has a very long tuft of hair that extends over all of her toes about an inch, and I've never seen any breed of dog who has that feature...I know there's a test you can get done at your vet's office that will tell you which breeds a dog has in them, but it's more than my budget can afford right now ._. http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/JannaxMichelle/layla2.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/JannaxMichelle/ocdogs002.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/JannaxMichelle/face004.jpg
Bichon Frise over Westies, or other? I want to get a new puppy. I have done some research, but not too much. Two dogs I have in mind are the Bichon Frise and West Highland White Terrier. There is a whole list of dogs I have stored on my computer, but We have a large house with a large backyard and and medium sized front yard. We live near a park, so I can give the dog a walk to the park 3-5 days a week. The youngest child in the house is 10 years old, but can handle a dog. We own already a 4 year old cat and a 6 year old Shih-Tzu. I am in Middle School, but can handle the responsiblities of a dog. I will be gone part of the day, though. My mom will be home most of the day though. I do need a dog that is small. I would prefer one that is small enough to fit in a dog carrying kennel or purse or can wear some dog designed clothes on occasion. Tell me about the abobe dogs, or suggestions of other dogs. I love mixed breeds, by the way. && if you suggest a mixed breed, please give me a specific. such as: Chiweenie-Chihuahua/Dachshund Dameranian-Dachshund/Pomeranian Silky Tzu-Silky Terrier/Shih Tzu
For the love of all pups!!!!! What do you think? Tuesday, 08 August 2006 BSL: A Lazy, Unconstitutional Fix to a Larger Societal Problem Monday, 26 July 2004 Apparently our dogs are part of al Qaeda too, or at least, they may as well be since currently many state and municipal governments have, in the name of "terror," launched an all-out assault on certain breeds of dog via a phenomenon known as breed-specific legislation. Breed-specific legislation (BSL) is just that: legislation, whether bills or ordinances, that seeks to put strictures on specific breeds of dog, or ban specific breeds of dog altogether. BSL usually follows as a consequence of several vicious dog attacks within a short period of time within a state or municipality. Often after a vicious dog attack or spate of attacks, politicians will make the claim that a certain breed of dog is "terrorizing" the neighborhoods and is therefore a public menace, though such comments are usually a knee-jerk reaction to a public that demands action. Unfortunately, the politician will often address the vicious dog problem in the easiest, though least effective way possible by proposing BSL. When proposing BSL, politicians often gloss over its inherent problems. The most fundamental problem with BSL, and the one that causes the most discord, is its unconstitutionality. BSL is a violation of 14th amendment equal protection and due process rights. BSL violates the 14th amendment Equal Protection clause — which guarantees all citizens equal protection under the laws — because it causes some dog owners to be deprived while others are not. Similarly, due process allows for citizens to have the opportunity to affect the outcome of legislation if that legislation should deprive a citizen of life, liberty, or property (property being the dog). If a state or municipality seeks to ban or place strictures on a breed or breeds of dog, but cannot prove breed inherence, which has been a large overarching problem with BSL, then those states or municipalities are violating dog owners’ due process rights. Despite BSL’s civil rights violations, bans have been passed throughout the United States because citizens either did not know their rights or because states and municipalities have hired so-called experts to "prove" that certain breeds were inherently vicious. Apparently you can hire anyone to say anything if you pay them enough — even an expert. These "experts," and the states and municipalities that employ them, waste tax-payers’ own dollars to illegally confiscate citizens’ property all in the name of supposed safety. However, according to Janis Bradley, author of Dogs Bite: But Balloons and Slippers Are More Dangerous, drapery cords and children’s own parents prove much more fatal to children than dog bites, and accidents involving bedroom slippers cause more injury to people than dogs. Still, many legislators and other politicians scurry to pass BSL in an attempt to quell perceived public outrage over dog attacks. Frequently legislators, and the supposed experts they hire, will make false claims which allege that certain dog breeds are more vicious than others. These false claims prima facie substantiate the need for BSL, which usually targets bully breeds, commonly referred to in slang as "pitbulls," and Rottweilers, though BSL has certainly not been limited to these breeds. Yet, temperament tests conducted by the American Temperament Test Society do not support the stigma against bullies or Rottweilers. Temperament test results for several bully breeds and the Rottweiler were as follows: American Pit Bull Terrier: 83.4% American Staffordshire Terrier: 83.3% Staffordshire (Bull) Terrier: 93.2% Rottweiler: 82.3% For comparison purposes, let’s take a look at other breeds of dog thought to be more even-tempered: Golden Retriever: 83.6% Labrador Retriever: 91.1% Pomeranian: 75% Chihuahua: 70.6% According to these temperament test results, a person is more likely to be bitten by a Chihuahua or a Pomeranian than an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, or Rottweiler. Also notice that bully breeds and Rottweilers are comparable in temperament to Golden and Labrador Retrievers which are thought to be more even-tempered, though recently the first successful face transplant was performed on a woman who had been mauled by a Labrador. Arguments against bullies and Rottweilers higher temperament test findings are that bullies and Rottweilers are larger or more tenacious and therefore inflict more damage on humans when they do bite. However, smaller dogs also bite and have even been known to kill babies. Herein enters a societal stereotype about certain dog breeds which do not necessarily hold true. For instance, countless times could you view America’s Funniest Home Videos and see a snarling, snapping Chihuahua or other small-breed dog, much to the delight of the studio audience. We don’t think of small-breed dogs as vicious. Many, when they think of Chihuahuas, think of the benign Taco Bell dog. Yet, despite their stereotype as innocuous, Chihuahuas are more unstable than bullies or Rottweilers according to their temperament tests. Consequently, baffled owners of bully breeds and Rottweilers can only scratch their heads at the media- and politician-generated stigma that consistently denigrates their dogs. CDC statistics also do not support the stigma against bullies or Rottweilers. While "Pitbull-type dogs" and Rottweilers do top the CDC list of dogs most responsible for fatal dog attacks in their report, "Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998," the statistics are flawed, as the CDC readily admits. One of the biggest problems with the CDC bite statistics is that there is no breed called "pitbull-type dog." Housed beneath this designation are at least twenty different breeds of dog, possibly more. As such, statistics compiled by the CDC on bully breeds are greatly skewed. Bully breeds and Rottweilers are also the breeds most often fingered in attacks, whether they’re actually the breed responsible or not. It is little known that when a victim or witnesses report dog bite attacks that the responding police or Animal Control officers will often simply record the breed of dog responsible as being the breed the victim or witnesses think it is, not necessarily as the breed may have been. Certainly erroneous breed recording due to victim or witness misidentification would follow since breed experts are not on call to respond to vicious dog attacks in order to make the final determiner as to breed. Incidentally, many breed experts are also unable to make a definitive breed determination. The CDC attributes these cases of frequent misidentification to a barrage of negative media reporting on bully breeds and Rottweilers. The CDC also notes that without DNA testing it is difficult to determine breed with any accuracy. At times, a breed designation is hard to determine even with DNA testing. Without a clear determiner of breed, BSL is a conspicuous violation of owners’ due process rights. DNA testing is also quite expensive and time-consuming but so too is breed ban enforcement. Enforcement of a breed ban is near impossible since the same owners and breeders who are being irresponsible with their dogs will typically continue to do so regardless of a breed ban. Because of irresponsible owners and breeders, it is difficult to know with any accuracy bully breed or Rottweilers’ propensity to bite since accurate population data acquisition for these breeds would require a Herculean effort. Owners and breeders of these breeds in particular often do not register their dogs, making it difficult to estimate their population size. Breed mixing and breeding outside the defined standards for the breed also make definitive breed determination and population data acquisition futile. Fortunately there exist much more effective solutions to irresponsible dog owners than BSL. Vicious dog laws have been proven much more efficacious in curbing dog attacks. These laws codify much harsher punishments for irresponsible dog owners whose dogs attack people. Vicious dog laws often make attacks by vicious dogs on a human a felony with a significant monetary fine. Unlike prior laws, vicious dog laws usually allow dogs to be confiscated and euthanized on the first offense as opposed to the third. Most importantly, vicious dog laws punish people who have actually broken the law unlike BSL which punishes responsible dog owners who have committed no crime. Additionally, irresponsible breeding is just now coming to the fore as an issue surrounding bully breeds and Rottweilers in particular. Currently, BSL is the proposed solution to unregulated breeding. For example, California’s SB861 is BSL that is aimed specifically at the excessive breeding problem. Unfortunately, SB861 has legislated mandatory breed-specific spay and neuter programs which punish responsible breeders causing irresponsible breeders to be the only breeders. Ironically, it is these irresponsible breeders who have caused the overpopulation problem, saturating the market with poorly-bred, unstable, and ill-tempered dogs. Irresponsible breeding and vicious dog attacks can be minimized or prevented through proper education of owners and breeders. For instance, many novice and inexperienced breeders are unaware that they must conform to a breed standard, which can be difficult even for a seasoned breeder to accomplish. Proper breeding, which can at times include culling an entire litter, ensures fewer unstable breed specimens. Education about the dangers of improper breeding could go a long way in preventing poor breeding. Education is also an effective approach in curbing dog attacks, as is enforcement of existing leash laws. A majority of vicious dog attacks are resultant of unrestrained or wandering dogs. If owners were educated about responsible dog ownership — keeping a dog leashed in public at all times, spaying and neutering, proper socialization and training — incidences of dog bites or attacks could be greatly reduced. Municipalities could also appropriate funding away from BSL and invest instead in hiring and training additional Animal Control personnel. More effectively trained Animal Control personnel would be able to discern the signs of dog fighting and breeding operations, incidences of which often involve severe animal cruelty. Alternatives to BSL have proven to be much more effective and do not negate citizens’ constitutional rights. So why would a politician advance a piece of legislation that was certain not to solve the problem it proposed to be solving? The answer, quite simply, is that BSL is easier than attacking the problems at their root. One need only look at the city of Chicago to understand why for them BSL is easier than solving the real problems that lead to vicious dog attacks. Chicago has always been socio-economically disparate with the poorest minorities living in the projects right next-door to half-a-million dollar town houses. With poverty comes few choices. With few choices come the temptation of crime. Gangs have offered some minorities the only respect they have ever known as well as fast, easy money. "Street" dog fighting, or pit fighting, is a favorite among gangs. Dog fighting is a way to not only prove your worth via your dog, but to make money from the gambling, drug dealing, and prostitution that often goes with it. Those who fight "pitbulls," Rottweilers, or other breeds, often acquire their dogs from unscrupulous breeders, sometimes called "backyard breeders," who inbreed and selectively breed bully and other breeds to be vicious. Often this type of breeding can lead to über aggression which can include human-aggressive dogs. A properly bred bully or Rottweiler would never be human-aggressive, but fighting dogs are often bred to have the heightened aggressiveness that can lead to attacks on humans. Fighting dogs are routinely tortured after a losing fight, though occasionally they are abandoned to wander feral throughout city streets, and sometimes they do attack people. The fundamental problem with vicious dogs in urban or suburban areas is not a breed problem since one breed has not been proven to be more vicious than another. The real origins of the problem are careless and irresponsible owners who allow their dogs to wander unrestrained, owners who are careless with un-neutered dogs (which tend to be more aggressive), backyard and novice breeders who inbreed or do not breed to the standard, and the socio-economic disparities that drive the poor and minorities to the gang lifestyle. Since problems involving gangs and irresponsible pet ownership do not have an easy fix, politicians often put a band-aid in the form of BSL over the scratch while ignoring the larger wound. Legislators, if they’ve done any research at all, know that breed bans don’t work. So when legislators propose BSL, they’re hoping their constituents don’t know they don’t work, and that they don’t find out what the real issues are. Legislators are hoping their constituents don’t know that BSL will put excessive strictures on their dog(s) or force them to give up their dog(s) in direct violation of their civil rights. We’ve already seen throughout history that once rights are taken from citizens, they’re seldom given back. Today it’s your dog; tomorrow it’s all sharp or pointy objects. BSL asks you to give up your dog(s) causing you to sacrifice your civil rights in the process, and paradoxically offers the public no safety in return. We can reasonably expect the government to provide protection from intercontinental ballistic missiles or al Qaeda on a macro level. But at what point will we stop expecting government to protect us on the micro level at the cost of our freedoms? --- On the Net: American Temperament Test Society site: http://www.atts.org Centers for Disease Control report on fatal dog bite statistics: http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/duip/dogbreeds.pdf California’s SB861: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/sen/sb_0851-0900/sb_861_bill_20050901_enrolled.html r...idiot, some people can't have kids...and they are much more of a companion than humans sometimes. You are my case and point! I never said I cannot or do not have children... it is the point that ANY!!!!!!!!! Dog can hurt a child. APBT used to be used as NANNIES!!!! for good ness sake...really, I have been bit numerous times in my life time with the work that I do, I will honestly tell you its not the bull breeds or the rotts you need to look out for. Children need to be taught how to act around dogs...that would lessen ALLOT of problems, so i guess it stems from parenting. Be a parent and teach them ALL they need to know, not just what you think is important.
Tell me about your dog? Recently a list was on yahoo showing the top puppies, alot of people were angry that their dog was not included, including my dog a dachshund. Tell me about your dog and why he/she should have been included. I would put mixed breeds at the top, because they don't get much attention. Let me add, I love all dogs, no matter what the breed, what great companions they are.
out of the following breeds? Out of the following breeds (or mixes) which would you think would be the alpha dog? List in order of pack order you think they would fall in. APBT-female Border Collie/Wolf-female Catahula cur/ lab-female collie lab-2 males rat terrier/lab-2 females pit/collie/lab-male BC/collie/lab/wolf-male chow/aussie/bc/wolf-female (All have been fixed with the past 6 months-pack order was determined before they were fixed The humans are top in my yard. I was just curious how people would guess as far as the dog aspect was. I understand about size not making any difference. My yard has even suprised me at times. My husband is alpha (and they listen to him best), I'm next and then my son. After that its left up to them. I was surprised by how the order turned out. I thought it would be different and wanted to see how others would think it would have turned out.
Good Dog or Bad Dog? The Statistics Are Horrifying...? Year after year Labrador Retrievers top the list of Friendliest Dog, Best Family Pet, Best Service Breed, Obedience Champion, etc. Year after year Pit Bulls and Pit-type breeds top the list of Most Feared Breed, Most Mistaken Identities, Breed Most Likely to Be Fought, and OPINION polls of Breeds Most Likely to Bite (although not true) Labs and Lab mixes are the most common dogs found in pounds and shelters. They are euthanised in the greatest numbers. Pits and Pit mixes are the second most common dogs found in pounds and shelters and therefore the second most commonly euthanised. You can find the 'good' dog and the 'bad' dog, side by side, waiting to die. So my question is this: Why, if one dog is so desirable, and the other is so 'savage' - why do they suffer the same fates? Shouldn't these figures be a little bit different? All opinons welcome. I don't block or delete- I encourage truth in the form of 'rudeness', if you like. Thanks. ADDED: Keep 'em coming, folks, your answers are WONDERFUL!!! I'll never be able to choose best answer! I know why this happens to 'popular' breeds- I just wanted to hear all your voices, united, so that maybe someone wanting to ignorantly breed or buy might learn a little bit, stop, and think about it first... THANK YOU!
American Pit Bull ? Such a breed ? can't find it listed on any breed registry, including AKC . I've always been taught that pit bull is a slang term for several breeds of dog. Pit bull as defined by AKC Define "pit bull dog" as any American pit bull terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American bulldog, or American Staffordshire Terrier, or any mixed breed dog that contains fifty percent of its lineage from those breeds. " I always knew for sure that if someone said pit bull, it meant one of the breeds above. Thats always been what I was taught. Am I wrong? could ya show me some sources? other than breeding pages Even though the AKC definition says American Pit bull, ots not listed as a purebreed in their registry Very good info, thanks. I see a lot of the registries for APBT are not in US. And yahoo and google searches do not result in any sources that could be consdered reputable. I'm seeing that Pit bull truly is a slang for many breeds as I thought. People consider APBT a breed and have their own registries and beliefs, but it is not accepted as a 'registered' breed in the US Thanks for all the answers! oh, and I'm not saying they are the same breed of dog. I'm simply saying that their is no actual pit bull breed. That the term 'pit bull' is a slang term reffering to various breeds. Really just wondered if it was accepted in us, thanks for the info For those that claim APBT is a breed, where is the proof. All I find on internet, is sites with peoples beliefs, but no concrete evidence Geminias... I'm not saying they don't exist, but they are not a recognized breed in the US. Much like the puggle is not recognized, but people claim it is a breed. my only problem with your source, is its not US and the following they stated on their site The UKC standards contained herein are intended for use by people already familiar with the breeds they describe, such as responsible breeders and UKC judges. They are not intended for use by other organizations for breed identification and should not be adopted for those or similar purposes, either in part or as a whole that kinda suggests that some breeds are only considered for UKC and the people who think they are a breed. Thanks for the source though. I really just think that they are currently not a recognized breed in US. Just because people think they are a breed, doesn't mean they are. They might be someday.. just like puggles, and other unrecognized breeds J.P true, but its the main registry in the US. The UK calls American Staffies American Pit bulls, its a different term over here
How do I train my dog to stay out of my way as I walk around the house? Dot is a 5 year old mutt that I've had for four years. She was listed as a Basenji mix at the pound when I adopted her, but she looks exactly like a Canaan which is similar. The description on AKCs website almost fits her to a tee. Dot is constantly under my feet. Both of the breeds I mentioned are herding dogs and I wonder if she is constantly trying to herd me toward the Treat Jar. Do you have any tips or suggestions to keep her out of my way? Every time I walk from one end of the house to the other, I have to travel at a snail's pace because she is slowly walking backward or hopping around directly in front of me. I'd love to be able to walk around without her in the way. She acts very young even though she's 5 and often shows puppy like behavior like rear up, front paws down while she is underfoot.
Get ten points if you are first to guess the mix breeds.? dog breed bite? What dog breed would be least likely to bite? I read about a list of the top 10 dog breeds least likely to bite, but I couldn't find it. Does anyone know what those breeds are and what order they would be in? I'm trying to decide what breed of dog I want to get. I really like Siberian Huskies, Akitas, and St Bernards, but I know that all of those dogs could be really agressive so I was thinking that maybe an Akita/Lab mix would be really cute and nice. What do you think?
