Large Dog Breeds Knowledge Base
What large dog breed is the best? My dog died recently, and I'm considering buying another dog. I would prefer a large breed, and I would like it to be somewhat of a guard dog. Not mean, but protective. I've read good things about German Shepherds, so I'm looking into buying a puppy. Any comments would be appreciated, as I'm still not sure a German Shepherd is the right dog for me. I'm a huge dog lover, and I would have plenty of time for it. Please let me know what large dog breed, you think would be best for me!
Which large dog breeds are generally best dispositioned toward children? We're considering German shepherds, Siberian Husky, boxer and maybe Labrador retriever. Any other breeds about this same size that are both good guard dogs and good with kids? Randy - I have NEVER asked a question about a shock collar at all!!! Please double check these things before you accuse people. I think they are cruel and would never use one on a pet!!

Whats a large dog breed that is calm? I want to add to my German Shepard and Tabby cat home. My German is High Energy, so I want a breed that is more laid back and good with people/other animals. But I want to stick with a large dog, no yappers!! Sorry, personal choice!
Large dog breeds & stairs??? My fiance & I are moving in to a house with a set of stairs, and we will be getting a great dane puppy and a boxer puppy, but I was concerned if going up and down stairs would be harmful for the large breed puppies (causing hip dysplacia), or if it's difficult for them to go up and down when they are at full size? (When I think about it, I have never seen a great dane go up or down stairs) anyone own big dogs, and live in a house with stairs? What's your opinion?
Favorites large dog breeds? What are your favorite breeds of large dog? Why? Have you ever owned one? My two favorite are German Shepherds and American Pit Bull Terriers. German Shepherds because they are very protective of their people, yet friendly if socialized. They are also great with kids, very intelligent, and such big babies with their family. I think they are some of the most beautiful dogs out there. I prefer black and tan, but I currently own a sable. American Pit Bull Terriers because they are friendly with everyone. In my oppinion they are the most versatile breed and very misunderstood. They have the cutest faces and are some of the most cuddly dogs I have ever met. I prefer black dogs with some white markings, but I also like tan (or brown) and white. I've never owned one, but I've had lots of experience handling and training them. I'm just asking what everyone likes. I thought it would be a fun question that everyone could answer and enjoy. That reminds me, please don't bash other people's answers.
Is it ok if my small breed dogs eat large breed dog food? I have a pomeranian, chihuahua, and english mastiff..... I try to feed the smalls dogs small breed food and the mastiff large breed dog food but the smalls ones prefer the mastiffs food. Will anything happen if they continue to chow down on dog food formulated for large dogs?
What is the most recommended large dog breed? My mom is planning on getting a dog but we don't know which to choose from. We're looking for an easy to take care of breed. Short-haired for instance... Big but friendly type of dog...
What are the pros and cons of owning a large/extra large breed dog? I am thinking of adopting a young bull mastiff/akita mix. I have no kids, 1 cat, 1 bird, big fenced yard and reasonably large house. I am near a big park with trails I plan on walking with dog daily and have neaxt door neighbors who have an akita purebred. What kinds of problems have you had with your big dog? What do you think is best food for them? What are your average vet bills? How is your dog with your other pets? Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated.
What is the best Large Dog Breed to have as your first dogs? I have had dogs before but never while living on my own.....i've had pitbull before which isnt too big but they are powerful. This will be my first dog I'm getting on my own. Also if you answer pleases list any breeders that you know of. thank you
Which LARGE dog breed would you recommend? for a 25 year old female? Easy to control, no strict discipline needed but is also there for protection. Would a Bernese Mt Dog be better than German Shepherd? Or a Collie, or a Golden Retriever? What are your thoughts?
Looking for a puppy. Preferably large dog breed. Any suggestions or advice? I am out of the house between 07:30 and 14:00 monday, 07:30 and 17:30 tuesday - thursday, and home all day friday to sunday. I also have 2 cats wandering about the house. I could keep the dog outside during the day as I have a large fenced yard. In the family there is me and my husband, and our 14yo son. Would this be fair on the dog or is there a more suitable breed for my situation? My yard is at the back of the house so therefore away from road and out of view of public. I also live in a quite rural area on the edge of a small village
What has your large breed dog eaten that you still talk about? My Golden retriever ate 14 blueberry muffins and alarge tub of margerine in the time it took me to walk my mother to the car. My St Bernard once strolled through the kitchen and casually helped herself to an entire ham that was about to be served.Last summer, after waiting eagerly for my crops to ripen, I saw that my retriever( him again)had found his way under the fence and plowed through 6 - 8 cantalopes, including the rind, as well as 4 baby watermelon.Last month, my retriever and spaniel went together to my mother in laws house and while they were in the garage , along with her labrador, the three of them somehow opened the storage refrigerator and emptied a vat( I mean a really big vat!) of pea soup with ham that she had made for a Knights ofColumbus meeting. We were betting on which dog won the hambone.I put my money on my retriever. Ol' iron gut.
Discrimination of Large dog breeds? Everytime I walk my dog or bring him to the park people act like I have a loaded gun pointed at them, they can't get away fast enough. I have the sweetest, well socialized rottweiler who loves every animal he has ever met. I was walking my dog the other day and my neighbors pug was running loose and the pug ran up to my leashed rottweiler and they were playing so nicely together. The neighbor comes running over and I say "He is a very friendly dog, he gets along great with little dogs." and the neighbor says "Yeah well he doesn't look it." He picked up his pug and tied it to a tree. It hurts my feelings that people don't trust me when I say he is very friendly. Has anyone had a experience with this? How would you handle it? Grr, Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations!
What kind of large breed dog has a long haired tail but has a short haired body? I saw this dog on the dog whisperer. Very pretty dog. Maybe it was a mixed breed. But the hair on the body was short kinda medium hair. the tail looked like a tail that would be on a maltese or yorkie but it was on a large breed dog. dog wasn't shaved. The face looked like a mastiff. the dog had the same color as the tibetan mastiff but the dog had longer hair on the tail.
Specific question about Irish Wolfhounds and a general question about large dog breeds.? My sister and her husband got a wolfhound not long ago and it's been a great dog. He's very well-mannered and extremely good with kids. My husband and I live on quite a few acres of land and since my children are hitting kindergarten age, I'd like to get a nice, friendly and big dog for them to play with. I have found very mixed information about the life span of a wolfhound so I was wondering typically how long to they live? I was also wondering, what are some other large dogs that make great family pets? I want a dog that looks intimidating and is protective(we have coyotes around my house) but is a really gentle and loving dog for my family. I may have not worded this right but I don't just want a dog to protect my family from coyotes. Any dog we get is going to be an outside dog and I want a dog that is large enough to take care of himself if need be. that's why I was considering a wolfhound. My sister is pregnant right now and her wolfhound has gotten super protective of her. The other day she went out to the garden and a couple of coyotes wondered onto the property and cornered her but her wolfhound immediately jumped to her defense and took them out without so much as a scratch. I just don't want to put a small/medium dog or even an extremely docile dog at that kind of risk. I also have experience with larger dog breeds(golden retriever & german sheppard specifically) My kids are also very big animal lovers. We have horses, a couple of cats, pigs and a beagle but especially since we have boys, we want a larger dog that will be able to run around outside and through the woods with them and what not.
What kind of large breed dog is best for a family with children 8 to 14 years? I want one that is calm, but can go on long walks, mellow temperament, and does not require a lot of grooming. Thank you for all your great answers. I have one dog, he is a Shepherd-Collie mix. He has soooo much long thick hair, he has to be groomed a lot. I don't want to have spend as much time on the next dog with grooming as I do on him.
What is a good medium to large breed dog that will be ok indoors? My girlfriend and I are going to be moving to Mexico at the end of the summer, and we've decided we are going to get a dog for company when we get settled in. We will be staying in a medium sized appartment, but will have lots of time and places to take the dog for excercise outdoors. We would like to find a good sized dog, but one that won't go crazy if it is inside for parts of the day. Also, it will be in a year round warm climate. I'm very interested in a Rhodesian Ridgeback, but have heard they are not best for first time dog owners. Can anyone offer any advice? I'd like to steer away from labs and german shepards if something a bit more exotic will work.
To give or not to give calcium to large breed dog? I brought my 10 week old Neapolitan mastiff puppy home from the breeder (who is also a vet) 3 weeks ago. She instructed me to supplement him with calcium daily. When I brought him to the vet last week, she told me I shouldn't give him calcium as he could potentially develop bone/hip/joint problems if his bones grow too quickly. Apparently this is more common in large breed dogs. Any thoughts on the conflicting advice?
Which Large breed dog should I choose? I'm thinking about selecting a large breed dog in a few months as my lab just passed away 2 months ago. Well, according to a few sites i visited, the following breeds are considered large. I'm considering an English Setter, English Pointer, Clumber Spaniel, Bernese Mountain Dog, English Sheppard dog, or a Samoyed??? Give me your opinions! Thanks!!!
What to look for in a large breed dog food? What are the important ingredients to look for in a good quality dog food? What shouldnt a dog food contain? What should the percentages of protein, fat, etc. be? It would be for a 130lb dog that is 3 years of age. Preferably something that I could buy at my local PetSmart or PetCo. Any advise would be great. Thanks.
